The history
Norwegian Air Shuttle was started in 1993.
The airline took over the flights after the bankrupt Busy Bee of
Norway A/S. This start up was done in close cooperation with Braathens
SAFE. Through the years this wet-lease of aircraft to Braathens
grew. In January 2002, their first own flights were started between
Stavanger, Norway and Newcastle, UK.
By start up, the airline had a fleet of
three Fokker 50 aircraft and around 50 employees. By summer 2002
the numbers have grown to six Fokker F-50 aircraft and around
130 employees. |
Fokker 50 operation
Norwegian Air Shuttle operated now on parts of the Braathens network
on the west coast of Norway. In 2001 around 500,000 passengers on
16,500 flights were flown for Braathens. These flights along the
west coast of Norway are between Kristiansand (KRS), Stavanger (SVG),
Haugesund (HAU), Bergen (BGO), Molde (MOL), Kristiansund (KSU), and
Trondheim (TRD). In addition to this it also operated flights between
Oslo (OSL) and both airports in Molde (MOL) and Kristiansund (KSU).
This service ended on 31 March 2003.
Norwegian Air Shuttle won in autumn of 2002 a government contact flying
in northern Norway. This started up in January 2003, and included the
following airport Andenes (ANX), Bodø (BOO), Lakselv (LKL),
and Tromsø (TOS). On 14 January 2003 Norwegian Air Shuttle decided to fully consentrate
on its 737 operation. Flying the Fokker 50 in northern Norway ended
on 31 December 2003. The whole Fokker 50 fleet have been sold off. |

The first Boeing 737
operation
Under the trade name "norwegian.no" the business expanded
during the fall of 2002. The airline added six Boeing 737-300 and one
Boeing 737-500 aircraft to serve domestic flights out of Oslo to four
destinations. With all these additional aircraft in place, the number
of employees had risen to 300. The new operation added between 14 and
41 flights per day, with the lowest activity on Saturdays and the highest
on Fridays.
Norwegian had with this expansion, started to compete with Scandinavian
Airlines (SAS) and Braathens, later the merged SAS Braathens/SAS
Norway. The first four destinations served out of Oslo (OSL) from 1
September 2002
were
Stavanger
(SVG),
Bergen (BGO), Trondheim (TRD), and Tromsø (TOS).
Norwegian had until 1 September 2002 been a specialist in operating
flight for other, while the airlines that leased in Norwegian had
all contact with customers - like ticket reservation and ticket issuing.
From this date Norwegian had to handle all of this for the 737 flights.
Step by step the 737 service has been expanded with new aircraft
and all these aircraft were 737-300s except for a -500 og some few
-400 on short time lease in the beginning. At the end of 2006 the
fleet consisted of 22 Boeing 737-300. |
The expansion
In July 2006 Norwegian wanted to capture the strong growth potential
in Poland, and opened a Polish base in Warsau.
In April
2007, the company signed a letter of intent with Finnair for the
acquisition of their FlyNordic. In July the merger took place and
FlyNordic was rebranded to norwegian.se
With the FlyNordic merger eight McDonnell Douglas
MD-82s and MD-83s were added to the fleet and has since been returned
to lessors one by one - the last went out of the Norwegian fleet
in October 2009.
Relatively new 737-300s with good maintenance history were hard
to find from early 2007, and therefore Norwegian entered into leasing
agreements for 11 Boeing 737-800 in May 2007 to continue their expansion. |

 |
|
The next generation
Shortly after having signed the lease agreement for 11 Boeing 737-800,
Norwegian also signed an order for 42 (+42 options) for 737-800 IGW
direct from Boeing. All these 737-800 will over time replace all
the leased 737-300. The fleet will with the last delivered 737-800
in spring 2014 consist of 58 Boeing 737-800 according to Norwegian
website.
Because of the strong growth and 737-800 were not ready for delivery,
six more 737-300s have been added to the fleet (five of them owned)
after 1 January 2007.
The first Boeing 737-800, LN-NOB, took off from Boeing Field in the
afternoon of 25 January 2008 and touched Norwegian soil at Oslo Airport
in the morning of the 26th. The aircraft have the portrait of the
famous Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg on the tail. The aircraft
is leased from Babcock & Brown.
The first of Boeing 737-8JPs (JP is the Boeing customer code for
Norwegian Air Shuttle), arrived Oslo in the morning of 22 August
2009 after a nine hour delivery flight direct from Boeing Field. |
