If you are going to stay at the airport, the spotter’s choice is without a doubt the Radisson SAS Hotel. The reason for this is location, location, location. It is nestled between Terminals 1 and 2 a short walk from the railways station and has a grand stand view of the western part of the airport - Pier C, the cargo area, and Terminal 2 stands. If your money is burning holes in your pockets, treat yourself to a business class room facing the apron on the uppers floors. I did and paid for my sins. Below is a selection of an early morning session from my “room with a view”.

Let us first start with the panoramic view from one of the top floor hotel room. If you click on the stiched picture above, you will get a 3000 pixels wide version.

My hotel room is almost at the same height as the ATC tower, but T1 and T3 blocks the view to the southeast. The light grey construction in the centre of the photo - the one with T1 on it - is the lift house on Level 13.

Now let us follow an arriving aircraft that has just landed on 23L all the way to its Terminal 2 stand. The aircraft I have selected for this tour is an MD-80 from Turkish Freebird.

The MD-80 is here seen at the Bravo intersection on Alpha. The MD is about to pass in front of the Aviation Viewing Park. The building you see to the right is the old fire station.

The MD has just passed Alpha 5 - in the background you see a couple of parked Citations.

Approaching Delta 6.

After passing behind Pier C, the MD reappears on Delta.

On Mike.

Turning on to stand 201 just below my window.

Parking brakes on

Now finished with the Freebird, I will now try to show you other taxiways and stands you can see from “a room with a view".

Instead of turning the corner around Pier C, this Delta Air Lines 767 continues along the cargo area on November and will park at one of the far gates at Terminal 2.

The nearest gates at Pier C are easy to cover.

Isn’t this a lovely sight? The Balkan Tu-154M turns on to Delta, heading for Lima, and a gate on the far side of Pier B. Behind the Tu-154 is a Monarch A320 rolling down Runway 23L. Photographing aircraft here can be a bit tricky, as there are a number of air vents on T1 and hot air from aircraft APUs at the gates on the far of T1 that create interesting effects.

An Air Jamaica A340 is approaching Delta 4.
Here you can see some of the ventilation installations mentioned above.

Fog banks passing over Ringway in the early hours of a Sunday morning in September 2004, but still possible to see the near end of runway 23L.
